Wildlife
Protection

We safeguard endangered species and their habitats through community-based monitoring, anti-poaching patrols, and awareness programs led by trained local scouts, ensuring that wildlife conservation directly benefits the people who share the land.

Conservancy
Governance

We strengthen leadership and accountability through ongoing training in management, finance, and governance. The Leadership and Management program (LAMP) builds the skills and confidence of board and management teams to guide Sera’s long-term success.

Livelihoods and Enterprise

Through Ujuzi Manyattani, our community skills development initiative, we empower women, youth, and pastoralists with practical training and opportunities to build self-reliance. These efforts, alongside projects in water, education, health, and tourism, strengthen local enterprises and improve living standards while advancing conservation goals.

Peacebuilding

Sera’s peace program brings together elders, inter-conservancy leaders, women, and youth with county and national authorities to mediate conflict, strengthen relationships, and promote nonviolent solutions for lasting harmony across the region.

Rangeland
Management

We restore and sustain degraded rangelands through community-led planning and sustainable grazing practices that balance the needs of livestock, wildlife, and people, protecting the productivity of these lands for posterity.

Carbon
Credits

We conserve grasslands and critical habitats through carbon credit initiatives that protect biodiversity, store carbon, and generate revenue for community development and conservation.

The Sera Rhino Sanctuary

Established in 2015, the Sera Rhino Conservancy is Kenya’s first community-owned and run rhino conservancy. We are proud to protect a growing population of both black and white rhinos, living happily in our shared landscape. The Sanctuary is also home to a wide array of other species.

In celebration of International Day of Forests (March 21), the African Agency for Arid Resources (AGAR) @agar_limited partnered with Sera Wildlife Conservancy to carry out a successful tree planting initiative in Sereolipi. AGAR donated 5,000 aloe seedlings, 130 Acacia senegal, and 20 Boswellia neglecta, in what proved to be an energising and community-driven exercise.

These species were carefully selected for both their environmental resilience and their potential to generate income through non-timber forest products such as gum arabic and frankincense. This initiative is therefore about more than restoration; it is about building sustainable livelihoods from the ground up.

To ensure long-term impact, participating community groups will receive training on the management and sustainable utilisation of these resources. Looking ahead, these groups will also be prioritised for selection as incubatees under the upcoming KAVADI Incubator, opening pathways for business development, value addition, and market access. AGAR Ltd is further committed to purchasing these products upon maturity, ensuring communities directly and tangibly benefit from their conservation efforts.

This model makes a powerful case for what is possible when ecosystem restoration and economic empowerment go hand in hand, particularly across arid and semi-arid landscapes. More seedlings will be distributed across community lands under Sera Conservancy in the coming days.

Reuben Lendira, Sera Conservancy Manager, recently represented the conservancy at the @tusk_org Conservation Symposium held in Zimbabwe. The fifth biennial event brought together over 50 individuals and organizations from across Africa under the theme “Leading Change: The Next Chapter in African Conservation.”

Discussions focused on helping landscape-level and local conservation organizations better understand how their work connects to global biodiversity initiatives and finance, and on identifying practical, collaborative pathways to increase visibility, influence and funding.

As Sera’s first time participating in the symposium, the forum offered a valuable platform to reflect on shared challenges and opportunities facing conservation across the continent. “It also opened doors for new relationships and future collaborations, which is particularly important at a time when funding streams are shrinking and conservation programs, especially those focused on endangered species, face growing disruption,” said Reuben Lendira.

We recently hosted a field visit from the @sandiegozoo Zoo Wildlife Alliance as part of the Twiga Walinzi program, led by Jenna Stacy-Dawes.

Twiga Walinzi (Giraffe Guards) is a community-led conservation initiative developed by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and local partners. The program brings together a dedicated field research team that conducts giraffe monitoring, manages camera traps, leads school outreach and runs conservation education programs in surrounding communities.

During the visit, the team had the opportunity to interact with our women giraffe conservation champions, a highlight that reflects the vital role local women play in wildlife protection.

Sera continues to work closely with partners including the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, @giraffe_conservation, @loisaba_conservancy, @kenyawildlifeservice, @nrt_kenya and @wildlandscapes_international, aligning our program goals with national strategies to ensure the most effective conservation outcomes.

These partnerships have been instrumental in safeguarding giraffe populations while delivering real benefits to local communities. Giraffes are best conserved by the people who share habitats with them, and strengthening community capacity remains key to securing a future for these iconic animals in the wild.

Last week, Sera Rhino Sanctuary Manager Leturuka Albert and Senior Drone Pilot Henry Lengoliai attended the Global Conservation Technology and Drone Forum @nature_drone_forum at the Trademark Hotel in Nairobi.

Held as part of World Wildlife Day celebrations under the theme “Technology in Service for Nature,” the forum brought together conservationists, technologists and innovators to explore how emerging technologies, particularly drones, artificial intelligence and digital monitoring systems, are transforming wildlife protection and ecosystem monitoring.

The event was officially opened by Prof. Erustus Kanga, Director General of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). His remarks underscored the growing role of technology in safeguarding wildlife and enhancing conservation impact across Kenya and beyond.

Organized by the @maraelephantproject in collaboration with @kenyawildlifeservice, the forum provided a platform to exchange ideas, learn from global experiences and discuss practical solutions to challenges such as poaching and human-wildlife conflict. The event also celebrated women in conservation leadership and recognized young innovators driving change in the sector.

As a community conservancy at the forefront of endangered species conservation, Sera values platforms like these that open doors for collaboration and fresh approaches to shaping the future of wildlife protection.

Everyday, thousands of chestnut-bellied and black-faced sandgrouse descend together in a massive flock to drink at Sera’s water sources.

These desert-adapted birds move in perfect unison, a survival strategy that helps protect them from predatory eagles. It’s a rare and beautiful phenomenon, and moments like these remind us why Sera is such a special place.

We’re thrilled to begin 2026 with wonderful news: a new black rhino calf has arrived at Sera Rhino Sanctuary!

On December 17, 2025, Nteekwa, an 8-year-old rhino and firstborn daughter of Nadungu, welcomed her very first calf. Nteekwa represents the first generation of mothers born right here at Sera, and now she’s continuing that legacy.

Here’s to new beginnings: for Nteekwa’s calf, for Sera, and for all of us working together to build a future where rhinos thrive. May this season of growth inspire hope, responsibility, and renewed commitment to safeguarding the landscapes that make life like this possible.

We’re so proud to share that Sera Conservancy was named 1st Runners Up for Best Community Impact Conservancy at the Kenya Tourism Excellence Awards 2025.

It’s a recognition of the years of hard work, dedication, and belief that conservation can be led by the people who call these lands home. Ten years ago, we welcomed our first black rhinos back to these lands. Since then, our rhino population has more than doubled, and our wildlife populations continue to grow across the conservancy.

This is Nariku Sera and her calf Loyau. Moments like this of a mama rhino nursing her young in the wild fill us with joy.

In Samburu, Nariku means “The One Who Leads the Way.” She was the first rhino to set foot on Sera grounds during the pioneering translocation—the pathfinder for all who followed.

Loyau means “The One Who Brings.” She was born during one of our most difficult periods, when funding cuts threatened everything. Shortly after her arrival, new partners stepped in to help us continue. She brought hope when we needed it most.

Our monitoring teams have been flying over Sera for years now. Ten years ago, people weren’t sure community-led conservation could protect rhinos. Now we have 30 of them wandering below our drones, unbothered, at home, and we get to watch it grow.

With their round, tufted ears, narrow striping and bright white bellies, Grevy’s zebras are among nature’s most striking creatures. They’re also critically endangered—only 3,042 remain worldwide, an 80% decline from historical numbers. Kenya is home to 2,812 of these rare animals, with Sera providing vital protected habitat.

Across our 840,000-acre landscape in Kenya’s Samburu County, these magnificent zebras have found sanctuary.

Sera’s story reaches far beyond rhinos. Since becoming a protected sanctuary in 2015, wildlife numbers have grown including elephants, Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, lions, leopards, and countless other species moving through its mosaic of habitats.

In 2001, the Samburu, Turkana, and Rendille people turned 840,000 acres of ancestral land into a sanctuary—theirs to protect, theirs to run, theirs to pass on.

In 2015, they took on something extraordinary: bringing 10 black rhinos back to land where they once roamed before poaching devastated the population. Today, there are 25, with five mothers having given birth to 15 calves over ten years and not a single poaching loss recorded.

Last year, four white rhinos arrived from Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, and one gave birth weeks later, bringing the total to five.

These growing rhino families are proof that community-led conservation can reverse decades of decline and create a safe haven for some of Africa’s most endangered species.

The Yellow-billed Hornbill (Tockus flavirostris) is one of the most charismatic birds you’ll spot in northern Kenya. Their striking yellow beaks, curious personalities, and evocative calls make them unforgettable — and they come with some amazing facts:

1. They are nicknamed the “flying banana” because of their bright, curved yellow beaks.

2. When nesting, the female seals herself inside a tree cavity with mud, leaving just a tiny slit. The male feeds her and the chicks through the opening until they are ready to break free — an incredible display of trust and teamwork!

3. Their calls range from bubbling “ko-ko” notes to rolling “tok-tok-tok” crescendos, often performed in chorus with others. These sounds define their territory and carry far across the savanna.

At Sera Wildlife Conservancy, we protect landscapes so that unique species and their extraordinary stories continue to thrive.

Today, we celebrate rangers: the brave men and women who risk their lives daily to protect wildlife, landscapes and communities. At Sera Wildlife Conservancy, they are the backbone of conservation. They patrol over 840,000 acres of incredibly rugged terrain, monitoring endangered black rhinos, deterring illegal activities and being a stabilising presence in the area.

They are courageous protectors, role models, educators and a symbol of hope. Their work has helped establish Sera as the first community-run black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, a historic achievement made possible through sacrifice and deep commitment.
