Bond Beyond Blood

In the heart of northern Kenya, within the rugged landscape of Sera Conservancy, a story of love, courage and devotion unfolded, one that has captured the hearts of many across the globe. Salome Lemalasia, a 33-year-old dedicated female ranger, broke barriers and set a remarkable example in wildlife conservation.

Nearly eight years ago, Salome was faced with an unthinkable task: a young male rhino calf had been abandoned by his mother – weak, vulnerable and alone. Rather than walk away, she stepped up and named him Loijipu. In doing so, she chose to become his mother. With no prior blueprint, no precedent to follow, Salome gave him a second chance at life. She nursed him, protected him, and offered him the emotional care that only a true guardian could provide. For nearly a decade, they lived a shared life of quiet resilience, learning from one another in the rhythms of the wild. Their bond was extraordinary; so deep that even today, whenever Loijipu hears the voice of a woman, he instinctively turns, hoping to see Salome.

The Rewilding of Loijipu

In the last three months, a new chapter began. After years of rehabilitation and bonding, Salome made the brave and selfless decision to allow Loijipu to return to the wild to live the life nature intended for him. He was rewilded and has since found a companion and new family, now thriving on his own, yet still carrying the memory of the woman who raised him.

This is more than a conservation success story. It is a powerful testimony that in this field, often dominated by men, women are not just capable, they are exceptional. “What a man can do, a woman can do better.” And Salome has proven just that.

At Sera Conservancy, we believe in empowering local women to lead, protect and preserve our natural heritage. Salome’s story reminds us all that with passion and determination, anything is possible.
